    You can tell a boat is set up proper when it's not throwing all that water high in the air. Good forward momentum, especially in a cat that doesn't need bow lift requires you keep those drives inline and level instead of pointing to the sky.

    I think that there is a huge elephant in your shop, You always seem to fidget when you are asked why you prefer to use the number six drive instead of the number Number eight Drive! Because you are an authorized MerCruiser shop as well as being a standup guy you do not want to bad talk any of their products! It seems to me that you found an issue with the number eight drives, It could be because you found a weak point in those drives or maybe they are just too difficult to modify to work up to your standards with all of the different boat and engine configurations! I could be totally wrong, But something clicked in my head when I heard you say that those drives were built for the new twin turbo Mercury engines!

  • @NeverEnoughPyro40
    @NeverEnoughPyro40 Рік тому

    You are absolutely correct when you said that water weighs around 8.34 pounds per gallon, But water could also weigh around 8.6 pounds per gallon if the sample was taken from the Atlantic Ocean! Answering a question like this is pretty difficult because saltwater is heavier than freshwater! Also the weight of saltwater can vary depending on which one of this worlds oceans the sample was taken from, Also the weight of both fresh and saltwater is going to vary depending on the samples actual temperature! After reading my comment I started thinking about the time I waited until mid November to haul my boat out for the winter! The distance from my Marina to the boat ramp was about 4 1/2 miles, While driving from the marina to the boat ramp my boat felt different, The engine was running perfectly and all of my gauges we’re exactly where they were all summer! The boat felt like it was dragging a bit, Almost like my bilge had a few hundred pounds of water in it! My bilge was bone dry as usual! That was the first time operating my boat in temperatures under 70°F, I thought it was just in my head because I was freezing my ass off with the temperature being around 48°F! Here it is about 12 years later and after researching the difference between fresh and saltwater I found my answer, The decreased performance in my boat was not in my head but rather it was real due to the fact that the water was so cold! The density of water increases the colder it is which is why my boat felt different!

    The helical cut gears may be smaller, but as they mech in the middle, they actually end up having a greater surface area in contact than XR gears. It scary to know how little contact there actually is in XR despite their size. No wonder they break, especially if they are the stock Mercury XR gears which seems to be made from chalk these days...

      How does Teague offer their Platinum Bravo with this engine? Is it that good? I'm just wondering if you HAVE to get that M6 drive...

    • @AB-80X
      @AB-80X 3 роки тому

      @@tbear68- You have to keep in mind that Teague is in an business that needs sales to survive. The Platnium drive is nice, but I would not use it for anything over 650 hp especially in a single application. If you run an SCX upper and lower, then you can run 800-850 hp fairly reliable. Unfortunately the drive has so much drag that a lot of that power is lost. What is it worth installing SCX drives when you go from a pair of say 600SCI's to 800 per side, if just about all of the performance is lost due to drive drag. The SCX is massive and if you install them on say a 38 Fountain with 600SCI's, then you lose 6-8 mph, if not 10. You need to add about 200 hp per engine go get that back. So in order for an actual speed increase, you might need 900+ hp. Then you are looking at much higher engine cost, more downtime etc. In a single application you are often a bit screwed, but you can make a single surface drive work if propped correctly. An M6 is the drive of choice. WCM can set the skeg up for the single, and while the drive is heavy, it's a lot more efficient than an SCX. Also, once you have put all the things you need into an SCX such as, upper, lower, gimbal, PS, rams, and all the rest of it, it is not that much cheaper than a Six and not that much lighter. You can also do the SCX4 of course, but again, there's limits. In a twin mono I'd just skip the whole "Z-drive" thing and go directly for an Arneson. I've driven a few different type of boats with the #7M Bravo conversion and it's a brilliant drive. Unlike SCX you GAIN speed rather than losing it, but unfortunately that will not work on a cat with a centre pod like a DCB or the like - unless it's a twin of course. So as has been the case for the past 20+ years, the big power single engine boats are just on the losing end of the stick, unless you want to make the Six work. I've driven an 1100 hp Elim Daytona with a single Six and that was probably the best single engine center pod style cat I have ever driven. So the idea that a single six cannot be used is not true, but you need the skeg blueprinted, the right prop and the right prop height. It is also important that the hull is blueprinted and the strakes and sponson sides are "sharp". It needs all the grip it can get and any kind of small hook in the bottom with be a huge issue. Make life easier for yourself. Get a twin:)

    • @tbear68-
      @tbear68- 3 роки тому

      Now that's the response I was looking for. Thankyou for sharing that experience with the Daytona. Just wondering how we order a 25' or 27' Speedster that will keep up with similar size clamp-on engine configurations. Seen a new 27' Speedster w/Teague 850 & platinum drive. Not sure what it's good for, but I'm sure with multiple passengers and full load you gotta be a patient throttleman. We're ready for a new ride but not ready for the 28' or 30' Speedster twin platforms.
